Svet Stoyanov, percussionist
Winner, 2003 Concert Artists Guild International Competition
Praised
by the New York Times for his “understated but unmistakable virtuosity,”
Bulgarian-born Svet Stoyanov has captivated audiences internationally
with his stunning technique both on the marimba and a wide variety of
other percussion instruments. Winner of the 2003 Concert Artists Guild
International Competition, he has garnered accolades from audiences
and professionals throughout Europe and the United States for his dynamic
concerto performances, his theatrical recital presentations and the
elegance of his chamber music collaborations.
Highlights for 2006-07 include a weeklong educational
residency and concerto engagement with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra,
as well as recitals in Detroit, New Jersey, Long Island and Tacoma,
WA. In New York City he appears for the second time on the Downtown
River to River Festival’s “Summer Stars” series paired
with fellow CAG artist, violinist Joseph Lin, and he also collaborates
with CAG pianist Jade Simmons on the “CAG/New Works” series
at Symphony Space’s Nimoy Thalia Theatre. Also this season, he
was selected to participate in Carnegie Hall’s Professional Training
Workshop Reich on Reich: Steve Reich @ 70.
Featured in SYMPHONY Magazine’s annual “Emerging
Artists” issue (January 2006), Mr. Stoyanov made his Chicago Symphony
debut at the Ravinia Festival in July 2005 performing Phillip Glass’
Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra with fellow percussionist
Jonathan Haas and conductor James Conlon, and later that same month
he gave a critically acclaimed solo recital in New York as part of the
Downtown River to River Festival’s “Summer Stars”
series.
Recent recitals include Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie
Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Jose Iturbi
Gold Medal Series and the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music. Other orchestral
engagements include the Seattle Symphony with Mr. Haas and music director
Gerard Schwarz and solo performances with Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra
and Wartburg College (IA).
Mr. Stoyanov was invited to perform as part of a select
group called the Zankel Band, for the opening of Carnegie Hall’s
newest space, Zankel Hall. Mr. Stoyanov made his Lincoln Center debut
performing the world premiere of the Glass Concerto Fantasy for Two
Timpanists and Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall with the American Symphony
Orchestra under the direction of Leon Botstein. He also appeared at
Carnegie Hall in Pierre Boulez’s Le Marteau sans maître
with the composer conducting. Other musical collaborations include projects
with Oliver Knussen, Elliott Carter, Robert van Sice, Leon Fleisher,
John Adams and Donald Sutherland
Svet Stoyanov earned his Bachelor’s degree from
the Peabody Institute studying with contemporary music virtuoso Robert
van Sice. Following a year on the Preparatory faculty at Peabody, he
is now a master’s degree candidate, studying with Mr. van Sice
at the Yale School of Music.
