Plans are underway for us to take a pilgrimage to the Holy Land this coming November. A “pilgrimage” is a decisively different experience from going on a “sightseeing tour” or a “trip”. It is a sacred journey that invites participants into a deeper commitment of personal reflection, shared worship, scriptural interpretation, and authentic engagement with one another and the people they meet along the way. You will be challenged to think about how we witness to Christ’s love, peace, and justice in a totally new way. And also, you will never read or hear the scriptures quite the same again.
We will trace Jesus’ life from his birth in Bethlehem, to his childhood home in Nazareth, to the Upper Room in Jerusalem where he spent the Last Supper with his disciples. We will worship at the Sea of Galilee and visit the synagogue where Jesus taught and preached. We will also visit the lost city of Petra and stand on top of Mt. Nebo where Moses may have stood to view the Promised Land.
The dates are: Thursday, November 8 – Saturday, November 17, 2012 departing from JFK. The total cost is $2250 per person which includes hotels, airfare, breakfast & 4 dinners, all transfer and admissions fees. Additional details are forthcoming for those who sign up but most importantly for now, we need a sense of how many people are interested and how many to plan for. If you think you would like to go, please contact Ruthie Jenkins or Rev. Cathy. A deposit of $100 is required by March 1st in order to hold the airfare. This promises to be an experience of a life-time!
An all-church spiritual retreat is being planned for March 16-18 at Holy Cross Monastery, beautifully located along the Hudson Valley. This weekend experience will be an opportunity for you to step away from the ordinary and step into a time of quiet personal reflection and contemplation. Holy Cross is an excellent venue for drawing near to God in the company of the Benedictine Brothers who live there. Reading, writing, prayer, meditation, conversation, and worship will mark our time together. The cost of the retreat is $180 per person plus transportation: If cost is a problem, please see Pastor Cathy and we will make your attending possible. Space is limited. Please reserve by calling the church office or signing up on the list in the back of the sanctuary.
A $50 deposit is required by Sunday, January 29; final payment is due February 12.
